Ride to Save Lives 2017 sponsored by family with a personal connection to the Charity

This year our Ride to Save Lives will be sponsored by family-run company weONLYmot.co.uk, run by brother and sister duo Misch and Sam Fretwell. Sam was himself airlifted by the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance following a collision five years ago. Since then, weONLYmot has dedicated time to raising money and awareness in all 8 MOT testing centres in Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire and also via events held in the local area to show their support.

In 2012 Sam was traveling along the A614 towards Cumber Park when an on-coming car turned straight across him resulting in a serious collision which saw Sam sustaining devastating injures. Several emergency services were deployed to the scene – including the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance

Sam explained: “The only thing that I can remember when I regained consciousness was the pilot stating ‘ETA to Queen’s Medical Centre in 6 minutes’. That journey would take more than an hour by road. The first hour after a trauma like the one inflicted on me is known as the golden hour – the hour during which the speed with which you have access to emergency treatment can determine whether you live or die.”

The Lincolnshire routre will start at 10.30am

Upon arrival at QMC a CT scan discovered the severity of his injuries. He had 42 broken bones in his face alone, he was blind in his right eye, his ear had been totally severed, he had a broken sternum and ribs, a punctured lung, a broken leg and a permanent brain injury.

He went on to spend 4 weeks in hospital including 12 hours of reconstructive surgery followed by months of physiotherapy. He will remain blind in one eye, but other than this, has made a remarkable recovery.

The Nottinghamshire routre will start at 1.30pm

Sam added: “This recovery in my mind is largely down to the amazing services of the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance. All in all, it was a terrifying experience but the quick thinking of everyone who treated me got me back on my feet quickly. We’re delighted to be supporting this Charity again. It seems that the day they saved my life was more like 5 months ago not 5 years!“

Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance’s Jim Vickrage, said: “We are extremely grateful for the sponsorship from Sam and Misch at weONLYmot.co.uk which will cover the costs of hosting this year’s Ride to Save Lives. This means that every single penny raised from the event can help us to save even more lives like Sam’s every day of the year. Please support this event and sign up now as places are limited.”

The Ride to Save Lives will take place on September 24, starting and finishing at Newark Showground. The route will take riders around Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire and costs just £10 per bike to join.  Register online now!
